Moving to the Baltics is an adventure. We trade tropical heat for the magical "White Nights". But no matter how much we fall in love with Estonia, Latvia, or Lithuania, there comes a day when the nostalgia hits.
It’s not just about the food; it’s about the ritual, the smell of the kitchen, and the flavours that remind us of home. Here are the top 4 things Latinos miss most when living in the North, and the good news: you no longer have to wait for a "care package" from home to get them. You can now find them in our shop, and we deliver to Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, and Finland.
1. The "Daily Bread": Fresh Arepas
In many Latin homes, the smell of toasted corn dough is the alarm clock. Finding a replacement for the versatility of an arepa in a local supermarket is impossible. Whether it’s for a quick breakfast with butter or a hearty dinner stuffed with avocado, nothing beats the convenience of Harina P.A.N.
2. The "Sweet Gold": Dulce de Leche
While there are local "boiled condensed milk" versions in the Baltics (like keudetud kondenspiim), they don’t quite capture the silky, caramel-deep flavour of an authentic Dulce de Leche or Arequipe. It’s the essential ingredient for pancakes, alfajores, or just eating straight from the spoon when the winter blues kick in.
3. The "Taste of Childhood": Maltin Polar, Pony Malta & Guaraná
In the Baltics, soft drinks are often berry-based or very carbonated. But for us, nothing beats the thick, caramel sweetness of a cold Maltin Polar or Pony Malta. These malt drinks are more than just sodas; they are energy, tradition, and childhood in a bottle. And for our Brazilian community, the crisp, unique fizz of a Guaraná Antarctica is the only thing that truly pairs with a plate of hot snacks.
4. The "Snack Attack": Cocosette, Pirulin, and Flips
If you grew up in Latin America, your "merienda" had a very specific flavour. Local Baltic snacks are great, but they don't have that iconic coconut crunch of a Cocosette or the hazelnut magic of a tin of Pirulin. And let’s not forget Flips—the cereal that we all know is actually a snack to be eaten straight from the box.
And for a salty crunch, we have Platanitos (plantain chips). These are the treats that make a movie night or a coffee break feel like home.
Bringing Home Closer
We created La Tienda because we were those expats. We knew the feeling of searching every shelf in Tallinn for a bag of corn flour or a specific spice. Our mission is to make sure that "home" is never more than a delivery away.
